Introduction/Thesis Statement
Excellent
Very well developed introduction & thesis statement. They engage the reader and create interest. They contain and/or introduce the topic and state the author's point about it. The hook is interesting, engaging, and makes a great comparison to the topic of the essay.
Good
The introduction & thesis statement create interest and are fairly well developed. But while they contain and/or introduce the subject, they are not very engaging; although, they do present the topic adequately. There is a hook but it is vague and underdeveloped.
Fair
The introduction & thesis statement introduce the subject, but they either do not give accurate and complete information, or they lack detail and creativity. May not cover the point of the paper.
Poor
The introduction & thesis statement do not introduce the topic. No controlling point about the paper is evident. There is no hook.
Body Paragraphs
Excellent
Each paragraph contains a clearly focused topic sentence that relates to the topic/problem being described.
Details in the essay are clear and specific, and there are enough details. Persuasive language is used appropriately, effectively and intentionally. There is crafty and excellent comparisons made between topics in the novel and the research done by the student. Points made in the body paragraphs support the students persuasive angle.

Each paragraph contains a topic sentence that relates to the the thesis and states a persuasive point.<BR>
Details are clear and specific, and the steps in the process can be followed well enough to understand the writers position. There is some comparison to the novel, but it is lacking specifics and explanation that make it relevent to the topic being discussed.

Not all paragraphs contain topic sentences that relate to the thesis. They lack a strong persuasive tone.<BR>
There are details, but they are not very clear or specific, or there are not enough of them to allow the reader to follow the progression of the topic. There is minimal coorelation to the novel.
Poor
There are no apparent topic sentences.Details are either wrong or lacking. They do not seem to relate to the point or persuasion.
Conclusion
Excellent
The concluding paragraph effectively unifies the essay. It makes a point about the topic that is creative and issues an effective and clear call to action.
Good
The concluding paragraph effectively unifies the essay, but it does not make a very interesting point or state a clear call to action.
Fair
The concluding paragraph relates a conclusion to the process, but it does little to unify the essay around the students thoughts or action required for the reader.
Poor
There is no apparent conclusion or point made about the paper. There is no call to action.
Organization/Structure

Logical progression of details with a clear structure that enhances the essay and provides a clear step-by-step description of the process. The transitions are appropriate and used very effectively to communicate urgency and persuasion.

Writing is clear and sentences use a variety of transition wors and phrases. There is consistent tone and word choice is appropriate for the subject matter of the paper.
Fair
Writing is unclear in many places, but sentences may lack variety. The tone is inconsistent and word choice, while adequate, does not clearly explain the thuoghts and feelings of the writer.
Poor
Writing is confusing and hard to follow. Contains fragments and/or run-on sentences. The tone and purpose is inconsistent and difficult to determine. <BR>
Sentences are wordy because of the lack of concise vocabulary and student used 1st and 2nd person in their writing.
Mechanics
Excellent
No errors in punctuation, spelling, grammar, or capitalization.
Good
A few minor errors in punctuation, spelling, grammar, or capitalization, but they do not detract from the overall meaning and effectiveness of the essay.
Fair
A few errors in punctuation, grammar, spelling, and capitalization that. while distracting, the meaning and intent of the essay can still be discerned.
Poor
Distracting and major errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization.
Citations

Sources are cited accurately and consistently according to the MLA guidelines.<BR>
