PPE, trach care kit, sterile gloves to fit, NS, hydrogen peroxide*pulse ox, ambu bag towel or chux to lay across pts chest
Student inserts suction catether with out suction and suctions on the way out for 10 sec. assesses airway
Use your non-dominate hand to unlock and remove inner cannula. Strict aseptic technique. Move quickly to prevent oxygen desaturation. Place inner cannula in the solution NS/Hydrogen Peroxide and use the sterile brush to remove secretions from inside/outside cannula. Hold inner cannula or set in NS rinse tray and rinse with Normal Saline. Tap solution off cannula. Replace inner cannula and secure the locking mechanism. Re- oxygenate as needed.
Clean trach site* remove soiled dressing* use cotton tipped swabs dipped in NS to clean exposed surfaces of trach plate* use cotton tipped swabs to clean around stoma* pat surface dry with sterile 4X4* apply new drain sponge* replace trach ties, doing one side at a time
Patient name, date, time, size of trach, patient pulse oximetry reading, how patient tolerated procedure. Document expected and unexpected outcomes.
