Vocal Quality

Ability to sing with free and open tone in a typical 6th grade vocal range.

Beginning Level

May sound rough or closed up.
Shouting or speaking voice used.
Not matching other students.
Fair

Beginning to understand how to breathe, shape sounds for correct singing.
Sometimes matching group.
Good

Student has a smooth, open tone and shapes mouth correctly. Able to perform competently with group.
Excellent

Student is a model for others of correct choral sound (open and free). Sound makes group stronger.
Singing Technique

Ability to show correct breathing, posture, and mouth opening.

Beginning Level

No knowledge of basic techniques such as proper breathing, mouth formation, and posture.
Fair

Student has some knowledge of basic singing technique.
Breath is more controlled.
Good

Student is familiar with good singing techniques.
Displays proper posture, breathing, mouth shape.
Excellent

Student performs easily: breath, posture, mouth shape are consistent.
Vocal Range

Number of notes student is able to sing.

Beginning Level

Range of 0-4 notes.
Fair

Range is limited to one octave:
8 notes (low DO to high DO)
Good

Range of one octave plus a 5th (5 notes) above or below the starting octave.
Excellent

Range of 2 or more octaves:
16 or more notes total
Stage Presence

Comfort level of student when performing. Ability to be leader/role model for others.

Beginning Level

Student does not feel any confidence on stage performing.
Does not want to take a leadership role.
Fair

Student feels a basic level of confidence performing on stage.
Desires to be part of the group.
Good

Student is gaining confidence as a performer -comfortable singing with group. Desires leadership role.
Excellent

Student is a confident performer.
Feels "at home" on the stage.
Asks for leadership roles and is a role model for other students.
