Informative-Explanatory Writing
Students will write an essay on an assigned topic. Essays must include the following components: introduction, thesis, body paragraphs, transitions, conclusion. After the rough draft of the essay is completed you will peer edit your document and then implement revisions for your final draft.

Thesis
Excellent
Thesis offers a concise summary of the main point or claim of the essay. Thesis is developed, supported, and explained in the course of the paper by means of examples and evidence.
Proficient
Thesis offers a concise summary of the main point or claim of the essay. Thesis is not fully developed throughout the entire paper.
Needs Improvement
Thesis does not offer a clear summary of the main point or claim and does not support the paper by means of substantiated examples or evidence.
Poor
Thesis is unclear and/or thesis is not developed throughout the essay.
Body Paragraphs
Excellent
Body paragraphs are coherent and guide the essay efficiently through each next paragraph. Paragraphs are supported with substantiated evidence and have at least 5 complete sentences.
Proficient
Paragraphs are coherent and guide the essay efficiently. Paragraphs are supported with evidence. Paragraph is missing at least one sentence.
Needs Improvement
Paragraphs are coherent but do not have a smooth transition into the next paragraph. At least 2 sentences are missing. Paragraph is missing supported evidence.
Poor
Paragraphs lack clarity and/or do not transition well into the next paragraph. There is a lack of sufficient evidence to support the essay.
Language and Vocabulary
Excellent
The response clearly and effectively expresses ideas, using precise language. Use of academic and domain specific vocabulary is appropriate for the audience and purpose
Proficient
The response adequately expresses ideas and uses some precise general language. Use of domain generally appropriate for audience and purpose. Domain specific vocabulary is generally appropriate for the audience and purpose.
Needs Improvement
The response expresses ideas unevenly using simplistic language. The use of domain specific vocabulary may at times be inappropriate for the audience and purpose

The response expression of ideas is vague, lacks clarity or is confusing. Uses limited language or domain specific vocabulary. May have little sense of audience an purpose
Conclusion
Excellent
Concluding paragraph summarizes the thesis and main points. It provides the audience with a ponder by connecting the papers facts, points, questions, and analyzes and explains how they relate to each other.

Concluding paragraph summarizes most of the main points and thesis. It lacks clarity in how these key points relate to one another, leaving audience without a thought provoking pondering statment.
Needs Improvement
Concluding paragraph does not clearly reiterate thesis and/or key points. Conclusion is not a full 5 sentence paragraph. Conclusion does not summarize the main ideas of the essay, leaves audience without a ponder.
Poor
Concluding paragraph does not reiterate the thesis and/or key points summarized in the essay. Conclusion is terse and lacks coherence, without a ponder.
