Character Description	Distinguished Description of the character is accurate and is based on logical and insightful textual references	Proficient Description of the characer is accurate and based on logical textual references	Apprentice Description of the character is mostly accurate. Textual references may be based on insufficient textual references	Developing Description of the character is inaccurate and based on random textual references
Character Analysis/Interpretation	Distinguished Character analysis/interpretation is extended beyond explanation through detailed elaboration. A conclusion is made and explained sufficiently to connect character to plot.	Proficient Character analysis/interpretation is extended through brief elaboration and connected to plot, but the explanation may be unclear and/or difficult to understand.	Apprentice Character analysis/interpretation is not extended beyond the explanation and support. A logical connection is made between character and plot, however, the explanation is brief and insufficient in order for the reader to fully understand the connection.	Developing Character analysis/interpretation is not extended beyond the explanation and support. No connection is made to plot, or connection does not follow logically from character interpretation.
Supporting Evidence	Distinguished The evidence strongly and insightfully supports the interpretation. Evidence is clearly stated and citations to the text are included.	Proficient The evidence accurately supports the interpretation. Citations are included, but not always clearly connected to the interpretation	Apprentice The evidence somewhat supports the interpretation. Citations are sometimes included to support the interpretation and connection to the interpertation is not always clear.	Developing The evidence does not clearly support the interpretation. Citations are random or not included to support the interpretation
