Point of View

Excellent

Gets right into the subject. Starts right away to make a point and frame the argument for readers. Takes a side. Uses persuasive language. Uses short, direct sentences, more casual than in an "academic" paper. The reader does not have to guess at your position. Can sum up your position in 10 words or less.
Good

Takes somewhat longer to get into the subject, doesn't do so until late in the first or second paragraph. Uses some persuasive language. Takes a side, but may not be as clear. Uses somewhat short and direct sentences, at times, may feel "academic." If you can't sum up your position in 20 words or less, you haven't yet nailed down what you want to say.
Fair

Does not get right into the subject. Does not make your point immediately. Does not use short and direct sentences. Readers may be confused in some places about what point you're trying to make.
Poor

Doesn't take a side. Doesn't make a clear point. Sentences are lengthy and unclear.
Counterargument

Excellent

Makes an excellent effort to be "fair", addressing the other side of the issue.
Good

Makes a good effort to be fair, addressing the issue from another side.
Fair

Attempts to consider the issue from another side.
Poor

No counterargument is evident.
Support/Lede

Excellent

Includes an excellent "hook," uses "zingers" and/or analogies extremely well. Effectively uses specific examples to persuade the reader. Includes reliable research or sources.
Good

Includes a good "hook," uses "zingers" and/or analogies well. Uses specific examples to persuade the reader. May include research or reliable sources.
Fair

Includes a "hook." May include "zingers" or analogies. Uses general examples that do not necessarily persuade the reader. Does not include research or reliable sources.
Poor

No attempt is made to use any op-ed elements. Some effort at support is made, but is often general, without specifics. No research or sources are included.
Conclusion

Excellent

Drives at, and ends with, a forceful conclusion. It is clear how the writer wants the problem to be solved.
Good

Conclusion is somewhat forceful and clear. It includes the solution to the problem.
Fair

Conclusion is not forceful enough or fully clear. A solution to the problem may or may not be included.
Poor

No conclusion at all, and the writer does not include a solution to the problem.
