Reader's Response: Identifying Theme Reader's Response: Identifying Theme The purpose of this rubric is to assess students' responses to reading in their reader's response journal. The response will be used to assess the reader's ability to identify the writer's ability to accurately identify the theme in the text and communicate it to the audience. Response	Needs Work The response was somewhat related to the text, but it was difficult to understand and connections were unclear. The theme was not identified. There were few, if any, examples from the text that demonstrated understanding of the reading.	Good The theme is communicated but is not in a complete statement. Student included a partial response with limited supporting details. There is not necessarily a concluding statement, and if there is, it does not clearly restate or summarize the theme.	Excellent Student identifies the theme. The theme is clearly stated in the topic sentence. The piece includes a detailed response to the text that was read. Student used details directly from the story to support opinions. A concluding sentence is used to restate the theme.
