Exceeds Standard

Each body paragraph contains a topic sentence and relevant, telling, quality concrete details that give the reader important information that goes beyond the obvious or predictable. All supporting details serve to prove the thesis statement.
Meets Standard

Each body paragraph contains a topic sentence that is adequately supported by relevant concrete details. Most supporting details serve to prove the thesis statement.
Partially Meets Standard

Topic sentence is stated in some body paragraphs. Supporting details are relevant but some key issues are unsupported. Support for the thesis statement is weak.
Commentary

Exceeds Standard

Essay contains explanation, analysis, discussion, comparison and/or contrast that demonstrates mastery and depth of understanding.
Meets Standard

Essay contains explanation, analysis, discussion, comparison and/or contrast that logically supports the concrete details.
Partially Meets Standard

Essay contains explanation, analysis, discussion, comparison and/or contrast that is weak, incomplete, or partially doesn't make sense.
Conclusion (Organization)

Exceeds Standard

The conclusion is strong and logical; provides a clear response to the main idea
Meets Standard

The conclusion is logical and adequately provides a clear response to the main idea.
Partially Meets Standard

The conclusion is logical but does not respond to the main idea.
Mechanics

Exceeds Standard

The essay contains only 1-2 errors in grammar, spelling, capitalization or punctuation.
Meets Standard

The essay contains 3-4 errors in grammar, spelling, capitalization or punctuation.
Partially Meets Standard

The essay contains several errors in grammar, spelling, capitalization or punctuation.
