Identifying Theme
	Minimal 1 pts	Basic 2 pts	Proficient 3 pts	Advanced 4 pts
The Theme Statement	Minimal Reader showed little or no awareness of what the theme was about in the story.	Basic Reader is beginning to understand the theme of the story, but lacks specific evidence from the text.	Proficient Reader identified the theme with sufficient support from the text.	Advanced Reader was able to demonstrate the theme clearly and comprehensively in the response.
Evidence/Support	Minimal incomplete, missing, vague, too short, not enough information. Needed support to do the assignment	Basic - you've given vague & general support, - likewise, your support came from just one part of the story, you haven't shown how the theme applies to the whole story.	Proficient - you've mentioned 1-2 events (things people said and did) from the story that connect to the theme you identified	Advanced -the support you give are many (3+) specific events (things people said & did) throughout the whole story, and these events clearly relate to the theme you identified
