Thesis	Limited Lacks a thesis that responds to the prompt; and/or has a thesis that is a restatement of the prompt.	Basic Has a thesis that responds to part of the prompt, but may not respond to all of the prompt.	Strong Has a thesis that responds to all parts of the prompt, but does so in a simple manner, without explanation.	Excellent Has an explicit, well developed thesis that fully addresses all parts of the prompt.
Organization	Limited The writing is scattered and unfocused. Does not include topic sentences that support the thesis.	Basic The arguments are not very developed, and may not support the thesis. Includes topic sentences, but not for every body paragraph, or they don't always support the thesis.	Strong The arguments are developed, but do not always consistently support the thesis throughout the essay. Includes topic sentences that support the thesis.	Excellent Argument is coherent and complete, and fully supports the thesis throughout the essay. Includes explicit topic sentences that support the thesis.
Evidence	Limited Includes little, or no evidence to support the thesis and/or arguments. Includes unnecessary or confusing information.	Basic Includes weak, vague, or predictable evidence. May rely too much on summary. If text-based, response includes a weak quote.	Strong Includes thoughtfully chosen evidence. Examples are logical, but may include some inaccuracies. If text-based, response includes an adequate quote.	Excellent Includes varied, relevant, and ample evidence which elaborates on the thesis and arguments. If text-based, response includes a thoughtful quote.
Analysis	Limited Little or no commentary, explanations, or opinions of the evidence, or has no connection to the thesis.	Basic Makes vague, simplistic, or inaccurate commentary on the evidence, and may not support the thesis. Quote is not explained or introduced.	Strong Develops reasonable and accurate commentary on the evidence and thesis, although it may be inconsistent. Quote is minimally explained and/or introduced.	Excellent Includes precise, insightful, and explicit commentary that elaborates consistently on both the evidence and the thesis. Quote is fully explained and introduced.
