Characters in the story
Basic
They are only able to list one character from the story. As long as they draw a character with a little bit of likeness from the story they will get this grade. There shouldn't be a student in the class that isn't able to get at least one character, especially since they are working in teams of two.
Proficient
They are able to list two different characters with at least a likeness of the characters from the story. Again, it could be the color of their clothes, their height or name. I will be very generous with the drawing ability.
Achieving
Able to list or draw at least three characters in at least a basic way.It could be the color of the clothes, the height or name. As this is very young learners I will be very liberal with their drawing ability.
outstanding
Able to list or draw three or four characters with at least a likeness of the characters. They also add more such as what the characters say or if the students can surmise something about the character such as "He was happy because....".
Settings
Basic
They are able to list at least one setting from the story and give some details about it. As they are in groups of two and I will pair them up with a high flyer and low achiever so they should be able to achieve at least this level.
Proficient
The students are able to list two different settings from the story, draw some details and draw them out to a bit of a likeness. As long as they are close to the one in the story or a real setting I will give them marks as this is still difficult for young learners.
Achieving
They are able to list three different settings from the story while drawing some details about the settings. They have a close likeness to the actual setting in the story or a real setting. Mean if the story has them in the forest but the students draw a different forest setting but it's still the forest it will be fine.
outstanding
The group is able to list three to four settings and also add more information from the class discussion that we had and/or from the story text or pictures. It shows a deeper understanding of where the story took place.
Major event in the story
Basic
The students know what happened but can't draw it in sequential order or only know one or two sequences in the major event. As there are two students I believe that they should easily be able to achieve this level.
Proficient
The students can show that they understand the main event in the story and can draw at least two sequences in correct order. They should be able to show details of the background as well.
Achieving
The students can show the main event that happened in the story. They should be able to recognize what happened and what the main thing that happened was. They should be able to have at least three different sequences in the order that things happened.
outstanding
The students show what the main event was and what happened but also they predicted what happened after the story ended. Did it end happily ever after or was their more problems and controversy.
