Expression and Volume
5
Sounds like natural language. Reading has excellent expression. The reader is able to vary expression and volume depending on the poem. The student speaks clearly, distinctly, and with appropriate and varied pitch and tone modulation.
3
Some expression, but not consistent. Attempts to use voice to make text sound like natural language, but not all the time. Volume is generally soft. The student speaks clearly but is, at times, indistinct, too quiet, and/or pitch was rarely used OR the emotion it conveyed often did not fit the content.
1
Reads mostly word by word. Very little expression or enthusiasm in voice. Little sense of trying to make text sound like natural language. Volume is generally very soft.
Smoothness/Accuracy/Automaticity
5
Reading is very smooth and well rehearsed.Voice conveys a unique interpretation of the poem. The student uses pauses and pace effectively to communicate meaning and/or enhance dramatic impact of the poem.
3
A few "jerks" in the reading where the student stops to problem solve. Flow becomes disruptive. Pauses may be due to lack of preparation or failure to observe punctuation.
1
Long pauses between words or phrases. Very choppy. Little, if any, attention to punctuation.
Pacing
5
The reading of the poem was at a perfect pace. (not too fast or too slow) It allowed audience enough time to think about the meaning of the poem.
3
At times, the poem was read too fast/slow, but for the most part, it was read at an appropriate pace.
1
Poem was read way too fast, or way too slow and it took away from the meaning of the poem. Pauses were not intentionally used. Poetry is choppy and “sing-song.” Delivery is either too quick or too slow. Reads words with no logical grouping.
Poise
5
Shows confidence in delivery. No nervous gestures. Appears well-rehearsed. Paused briefly after the INTRODUCTION (SEE BELOW) before beginning the recitation of the poem.
3
Stands upright but seems to lack some confidence. Some nervous gestures may be evident. Appears rehearsed. Failed to take a breath and pause before beginning the poem after giving the introduction.
1
Slouches and shows a lack of confidence. Does not appear rehearsed, i.e. just read the poem without interpretation, inflection, pauses at punctuation, etc.
Timing
5
Stayed within the 2- 5-minute time limit.
3
Went over time but not under time limit.
