Writing a Short Story Students will write a short story that includes factual details, character traits, actions, emotions and key plot
	Proficient Exceeds 30 pts	Fair Meets standards 20 pts	Poor Fails to meet standards 10 pts
Beginning 5 pts Student uses the beginning to grasp the reader's interest.	Proficient Beginning is well developed and provides background information about the character(s) or setting. In addition, the hook grasps the reader's interest.	Fair Provides a beginning that provides some background information about the character(s) or setting. The hook somewhat grasps the reader's interest.	Poor Fails to provide an adequate beginning that provides some background information about the character(s) or setting or a hook to grasp the reader's interest.
Plot 5 pts Student uses the main events to advance the plot of the story.	Proficient Plot is clearly depicted in the story and the story is developed around events that lead to a climax before the resolution.	Fair Plot is depicted in the story and the story is somewhat developed around a few key events that lead to a climax followed the resolution.	Poor Plot is vague or unclear. The story fails to include events that lead to a climax before the resolution which may be unclear.
Dialogue 5 pts Student uses dialogue to tell the story.	Proficient The story includes a sufficient amount of dialogue that is correctly written and easily read. Dialogue is correctly punctuated.	Fair The story includes dialogue . Most dialogue is correctly punctuated and easy to read.	Poor The story does not include a sufficient amount of dialogue that is correctly written and easily read. Dialogue is not correctly punctuated.
Characterization 10 pts Student provides enough details to develop the character.	Proficient Student uses descriptive details to develop the character. Characters are interesting and have depth.	Fair Student uses some descriptive details to develop the character. Characters are somewhat interesting and have some depth.	Poor Student fails to use descriptive details to develop the character. Characters lack depth.
Grammar and Punctuation 5 pts Student demonstrates careful attention to rules of grammar, punctuation, and spelling	Proficient Story contains few errors in spelling, punctuation, and/or grammar.	Fair Story contains some errors in spelling, punctuation, and/or grammar.	Poor Story contains many errors in spelling, punctuation, and/or grammar.
