Making conceptual connections

Has the student included the appropriate amount of information in their concept map, and made an effort to forge connections between disparate ideas/examples from the course?

Poor

Concept map includes too few or too many nodes, conceptual connections between them is severely lacking, logic is not clear.
Fair

Concept map includes too few or too many nodes, logical connections between concepts is lacking.
Good

Concept map includes appropriate number of nodes, logic is not entirely clear, concept map may look rushed or not well thought out.
Excellent

Concept map includes at least 20 and not more than 30 nodes, connected in a logical manner.
Digging deeper

Has the student shown their engagement with their chosen biological concept by incorporating theories, examples, or vocabulary from outside the provided resources, going beyond the textbook and lectures of the course?

Poor

No attempt is made at incorporating any outside information.
Fair

Concept map includes some attempt at incorporating outside information, but less than 3, citation is absent, or outside information does not connect to other nodes of the concept map.
Good

Concept map includes 3-5 pieces of clearly marked outside information, but they are not well integrated with the map, or citation is incorrect.
Excellent

Concept map includes 3-5 examples, theories, or vocabulary words as nodes, which come from outside the course resources. Outside information is clearly marked on the map, and clearly and appropriately cited.
Visual Composition

Has the student engaged fully with using LucidChart to produce a visually pleasing and well organized concept map?

Poor

No attempt was made to design the concept map for an audience. Severely lacking in color, organization, and font or size of text, in a way that distracts from the concepts presented.
Fair

More than a single element is severely lacking and distracts from the overall design/visual composition of the concept map.
Good

The concept map is attractive, although some elements could be improved. Some questionable choices in formatting text, color, or placement of different shapes and connectors.
Excellent

The concept map is well organized and uncluttered. Text is of appropriate size and font. Color schemes are appropriate to guide the reader through the levels of the concept map.
Peer Review

Has the student thoughtfully evaluated the concept map of their partner, in the form of a one page reflection on the use of concept maps for studying biology?

Poor

Peer review/reflection is very short or completely absent.
Fair

The one page peer review/reflection has serious issues with clarity, or is missing 1 or more elements.
Good

The one page reflection addresses the peer's concept map but does not make clear connections to their own map, or does not draw a larger conclusion.
Excellent

The one page reflection clearly and thoughtfully evaluates a peer's concept map. The reflection includes at least 2 things that they liked and 2 things that could be improved in the map. The reflection makes at least one comparison between this map and their own map. There is some attempt to draw a larger conclusion on the use of concept maps and LucidChart in classes.
