Excellent
Virtually no errors. Pitch is very accurate.

An occasional isolated error, but most of the time pitch is accurate and secure.

Some accurate pitches, but there are frequent and/or repeated errors.

Very few accurate or secure pitches.

No clear center of pitch, or student refuses to sing.
Rhythm
Excellent
Student keeps a steady beat and the rhythms are accurate for the music being sung.
Very Good
Student keeps a steady beat and the rhythms are mostly accurate. There are few duration errors, and they do not detract from the overall performance.
Good
The beat is somewhat unclear. Not all rhythms are accurate with frequent and/or repeated duration errors. Rhythm problems occasionally detract from the overall performance.
Average
The beat is unclear and rhythms are frequently inaccurate, detracting severly from the overall performance.
Poor
No rhythm whatsoever, or student refuses to sing.
Tone Quality
Excellent
Tone is consistently focused, clear, and centered throughout the range of the voice.
Very Good
Tone is focused, clear, and centered through the normal singing range. Extremes in range sometimes cause tone to be less controlled. Tone quality does not detract from the performance.
Good
Tone is often focused, clear, and centered, but sometimes is unmanageable in the normal singing range. Extremes in range are usually uncontrolled. Occasionally the tone detracts from overall performance.
Average
The tone is often not focused, clear, or centered regardless of the range, significantly detracting from the overall performance.
Poor
Mumbles, shouts, sings inappropriately, or refuses to sing.
Expression and Style
Excellent
Performs with a creative nuance and style in response to the score and limited coaching. Follows melodic direction.
Very Good
Typically performs with nuance and style that is indicated in the score or which is suggested by instructor or peer.
Good
Sometimes performs with nuance and style that is indicated in the score or which is suggested by instructor or peer.
Average
Rarely demonstrates expression and style. Just sings the notes on the page.
Poor
Virtually no expression or style treatment, or student refuses to sing.
Diction
Excellent
Student articulates clearly and the text of the music is understandable.
Very Good
Text can be understood most of the time. Voiced and unvoiced consonants are occasionally unclear.
Good
Student is sometimes articulating the words, but the text is often not discernible.
Average
No voiced or unvoiced consonants presents. Student cannot be clearly understood most of the time.
Poor
Cannot understand a single word the student is singing, or student refuses to sing.
