Emerging

Needs to continue to develop, focusing on the topic at hand and ensuring their arguments and perspectives connect with in-depth understandings and perspectives. There is no thesis and no attention to the Five Rs.
Developing

The main point or points are clear but need to be elaborated further on specifics to strengthen their perspectives, such as ignoring many steps within the Five R Process. The thesis is inferred, but it is unclear.
Proficient

The reflections show a proficient response which provides the reader a view into your thinking about the topic but lacks some aspects which would make it easier to respond, such as leaving out steps of the Five R Process. The thesis is viable but broad.
Extending

Focus is clear and substantial throughout the Reflection, giving the reader such a clear view into your thinking about the topic that the reader can easily find a point of entry to respond. The student addresses the 5 Rs and can clearly articulate the journey from analysis to a conclusion. The thesis is clear, relevant, and specific.
Intellectual Engagement

Emerging

The response needs to continue developing and reference issues raised through readings and/or class activities. No textual evidence is present. Incohesive and wanders from the topics presented through the Rs. Opinion paper. No attention to grammar and punctuation.
Developing

Entry references issues raised through readings and/or class activities but simply restates those ideas with little evidence of your own consideration. Quotes are used, but the textual analysis process is missing. Defaults to synopsis and opinions. The paper does not flow, and there are grammar mistakes.
Proficient

The Reflection response identifies and engages some of the issues raised in class with some evidence of your own consideration. Little attention to textual analysis. Sophisticated sentence structure and attention to grammar.
Extending

Reflection demonstrates thoughtful identification of and engagement with the important issues raised through reading, and/or class discussions, and/or activities. Student refrains from restating the story and defaulting to pathos (opinion) instead of logos (reasoning). Textual analysis is viable and clear. No grammatical or punctuation mistakes.
