Mathematics in Melody
Poor
The student uses a different set of beats in some measures but it does not add to 4, the beat is difficult to find. Or the beat adds to 4 in some measures, but with a simple and uncreative combination such as 4 quarter notes.
Good
The beats adds up to 4 in each measure, but it is slightly repetitive and uses the same combination of beats to add up to 4 multiple times. This combination is creative and uses a different range of beats that we discussed in class to get to 4.
Excellent
The melody uses a wide range of beats that we discussed in class. I can tap my foot to the melody, find the beat, and count with it. The beats add up to 4 in each measure, using many different combinations of beats.
Music Research
Poor
The student did not tap their foot when we listened to Olivia's music as a class to find the beat, or tapped at random times. The student did not participate in the lesson, and/or wrote random answers for the quiz and research list (less than 5 bullets).
Good
The student attempted to find the beat with their foot to Olivia's songs in class. The student payed attention to the lesson and tried their best on the quiz but still had some errors. Their bulleted research list contains a few notes (5-8) with different, quality observations.
Excellent
The student tried their best to tap their foot to the beat of each song that we listened to as a class. The student payed attention to the lesson and had little to no mistakes on the following quiz. The student found important notes and researched many different areas of music with 10 bullets.
Melody Creation- Virtual Piano
Poor
The melody is plagiarized or is a poorly put-together set of the same few notes. There is no creativity (tempo change, beat change, note change, etc.) and lacks a sense of care. The melody is less than 20 seconds long.
Good
The melody is composed of a few different beats but little else is changed. Effort is still shown, but could use more tempo changes or range of notes. The melody is between 20-30 seconds long.
Excellent
The melody is at least 30 seconds long and contains different combinations of beats, tempos, and notes. The melody is original and "tells a story".
Email to Olivia
Poor
The email does not have the melody downloaded from the virtual piano website and attached as a file, and/or has little to no words written to Olivia. The email demonstrates procrastination with little effort behind the message, and many spelling or punctuation errors.
Good
The email has the melody downloaded from the virtual piano website and attached as a file. The student thanks Olivia for considering their piece, but lacks a description about it and inspiration behind it. There are few spelling or punctuation errors.
Excellent
The email has the melody downloaded from the virtual piano website and attached as a file. The student shows respect and writes a thoughtful message about how they created their melody, and why Olivia should use theirs. There are no spelling or punctuation errors.
