Meets the Expectation Determines what is most important and identifies details that directly support the main idea.	Progressing Determines what is important and includes limited details to support the main idea to identify the theme.	Improvement Needed Does not determine what is important and has difficulty supporting the main idea.
Theme Standard RL.4.2: Determine the theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text	Meets the Expectation Accurately determines the theme of the text with reason; the theme is relevant to readers.	Progressing Determines the theme of in reference to a life lesson the characters are learning; not a theme for readers.
