Observation and Inference

Definitions	Highly Proficient Thoroughly defines observation and inference as stated in the "Proficient" box, and, in addition, uses scientific language.	Proficient Accurately defines observation as something that is detected by one or more of the senses or by sense enhancing technology; and inference as a guess that goes beyond the observations but is based on them.	Nearly Proficient Accurately defines either inference or observation, or partially define both.	Not Yet Proficeint Inaccurately defines observation and inference.
Observation	Highly Proficient Identifies four or more observations related to the situation that cannot be mistaken for something else; identifies detailed characteristics that provide relevant support to the inference.	Proficient Identifies three observations related to the situation that can not be mistaken for something else and are relevant to the inference	Nearly Proficient Identifies two observations related to the situation that can not be mistaken for something else, but one that can; or are not relevant to the inference.
