Individual research paper oral presentation
Each student will choose a scientific article from a recommended journal and present a detailed summary. The student will correlate research findings and discussion with objectives of and material covered in the course.

Superior

Student has a stronghold on the content, methodology and conclusions of the article and is able to effectively "teach" the class. No mistakes are made with regard to content knowledge.
Good

Student has a basic understanding of the content. Articles findings are effectively communicated but show shortcomings in mastery of the material or in explanation of findings.
Fair

Student has only a superficial or limited understanding of content. Mistakes were made during the presentation. The main findings of the article, methodology or conclusions of the paper are explained incorrectly or not explained clearly.
Poor

Student has little to no understanding of the content addressed in the presentation and does not communicate the findings or methodology of the article clearly.
Conclusion
5 %

Superior

Conclusion reviews information presented, restates the findings and ends with a clear summary of the "take home points" of the article.
Good

Conclusion fails to do ONE of the following: review of information, restatement of findings or summarizing of take home points.
Fair

Conclusion fails to do TWO of the previous criteria.
Poor

Presentation ends without an official conclusion.

Student pays excellent attention to writing mechanics, visual details, spelling, etc. Presentation has very few or no errors.

Student pays good attention to writing mechanics, visual details, spelling, etc. Presentation has few errors.

Student pays some attention to writing mechanics, visual details, spelling, etc. Presentation has several errors.

Student pays no attention to writing mechanics, visual details, spelling, etc. Presentation has many errors.
Graphics / Visual Aids

Superior

Student's graphics explain and reinforce screen text and presentation. Includes graphic's source when it is not from scientific article being presented.

Visual aids are visually pleasing, non-crowded and work well to support the speaker and convey information.
Good

Student's graphics relate to text and presentation. One graphic is not clear or is difficult to read. Includes graphic's source when it is not from scientific article being presented.

Small mistakes may be present but do not interfere with the effective functioning of the aids.
Fair

Student occasionally uses graphics that rarely support text and presentation. Two graphics are not clear or are difficult to read. Does not includes graphic's source.

Mistakes in the visuals are distracting from the presentation.

Student presents information in an illogical sequence which the audience cannot follow. The presentation is missing major components which confuses the viewer about the overall purpose of the research paper.
