Argument Essay
This rubric is for evaluating synthesis essays and the ability to formulate argumentative writings. You read articles in class and used a template to plan your argument. The assignment is to synthesize at least three sources including a visual.

Exemplary
Argument presented is of high quality with logical organization which adds to its strength. It is appropriately matched to the audience. Evidence is strong and well-developed. A counterargument is included.
Accomplished
Argument presented is of very good quality, is logical and well organized. The argument is appropriate for the audience. Evidence is good and presented satisfactorily. A counterargument is included.
Developing
Argument presented is of good quality, basically logical and organized. The argument is appropriate for the audience. Evidence is present but may miss the mark.
Beginning
Argument presented has some organization and logic. The argument is somewhat appropriate for the audience. Evidence may be weak or poorly presented.
Does Not Meet
Argument presented is lacking strong quality, has weak or no organization and logic. Evidence is minuscule or not evident.
Purpose
Exemplary
The author is nearly an expert at convincing an audience; more than enough support was given.
Accomplished
The essay uses strong evidence to support the thesis. The audience is convinced.
Developing
The essay begins to convince the audience, but needs more support.
Beginning
The essay communicates its side, but fails to convince the audience because the essay lacks enough support.
Does Not Meet
The essay does not achieve its goal.
Grammar/Punctuation/Spell
Exemplary
There are no grammatic or usage errors, and no punctuation errors. Sentences are well constructed and flow well.
Accomplished
There are few, if any errors and great flow in sentences.
Developing
There are few errors in grammar and punctuation, and the flow is readable.
Beginning
There are errors that interfere with the ability to follow the essay.
Does Not Meet
Grammar errors and punctuation errors interfere with the reader's ability to easily read the essay.
Synthesis
Exemplary
The sources are cited effectively (direct quotations, paraphrasing, or in-text citations).
Accomplished
Sources are cited with direct quotations but the evidence may not support the claims.
Developing
Sources are cited with direct quotations but the evidence may be limited.
Beginning
Sources are insufficient and not effectively integrated into the writing.

Sources are only summarized and not embedded into the argument.
