Reflective Response Journal 
Students maintain journals for the books they are reading independently an have freedom in choosing prompts for their writing. However, they may only repeat the same prompt every other week. Students must write a single-spaced, one full page entry that includes a personal connection to the week's text. Journals are to be submitted on Mondays.

Entry is too short and too rushed to explain ideas and thoughts about the book. The personal connection is nonexistent or minimal.
Progressing

Entry is appropriate in length for the idea, connection or question being explained. The personal connection is present.
Excellent

Entry length shows the student put extra effort and time into responding to the book. The personal connection is well articulated.
Critical Thinking

Does the student's responses demonstrate critical thought about the text?

Approaching

The student's response does not demonstrate critical thought about the text. Student does not discuss ideas and themes of the book adequately.
Progressing

The student's response demonstrates critical thought about the text. Student discusses ideas and themes of the text.
Excellent

The student's response demonstrates superior critical thought about the text. Student discusses and analyzes ideas in the text.
Language and Conventions

Does the student's response make proper use of academic language and conventions such as spelling, punctuation, capitalization, etc.

Approaching

Sentence structure and vocabulary is basic or incomplete. Inappropriate use of capitalization, spelling and punctuation is demonstrated.
Progressing

Sentence structure and vocabulary is developing. Overall appropriate use of punctuation, spelling and capitalization is demonstrated.
Excellent

Sentence structure and vocabulary written above grade level. A consistent use of appropriate punctuation, spelling and capitalization is demonstrated.
