Beginning	Novice Student attempts to identify how the story began, but does not identify the characters, setting, or the problem	Apprentice Student can give 1 detail from the beginning of the story, but does not identify all elements ( characters, setting, and problem)	Practitioner Student identifies key elements of the beginning of the story (characters, setting, and problem), but does not provide specific details to provide a full understanding.	Expert Student correctly expresses all key elements from the beginning of the story, including the problem, and describes how it introduces the story.
Middle	Novice Student attempts to identify events from the middle of story, but is unable to correctly do so.	Apprentice Student can give 1 event from the middle of story, but leaves out the key point(s), or what the character(s) is doing to solve the problem.	Practitioner Student identifies key elements from the middle of the story, which tell what the character(s) is doing to solve the problem.	Expert Student correctly identifies all the key elements of middle of the story and can express why it is important to the story. Student included dialogue
End	Novice Student attempts to identify events from the end of story, but is unable to do so.	Apprentice Student can give 1 event from the end of story, but leave out how the problem is solved.	Practitioner Student identifies how the problem is solved.	Expert Student correctly expresses all the key elements from the ending of the story and describes how the problem is solved. Student included dialogue.
