Honors Poetry Portfolio Rubric 
Honors Poetry Portfolio: This project is the final assessment in the unit of Poetry. This is a two week task wherein students compile original poetry done in class showcasing the use of imagery, sound effects and rhyming, etc. Poems showcase various poetry styles learned, plus free verse poetry of the student.

The portfolio meets 100% of the required content and format. The daily checklist was completely filled out. The portfolio cover/thematic art is fully planned significant.
Originality 50 pts.

Beginning

Work appears to be thoughtless or rushed. Work is very repetitive and ideas seem cliched, impersonal or unoriginal. Poems do not meet requirements.
Developing

The poems are creative, but don't demonstrate a variety of approaches. Poems are not varied and do not meet most of the requirements.
Established

Poems are creative and thoughtful. They are carefully written, but development or craft could go further. Most poems meet requirements.
Excelling

Poems are creative and original. It is evident that the poet put thought into their words and innovatively conveyed their ideas and emotions. Poems meet all requirements.
Literary Devices/Fig. lang. 50 pts.

Beginning

The poems did not include any literary devices such as imagery, sound effects and rhyming pattern. No figurative language was uses such as simile, metaphor.
Developing

The poems use some literary devices and figurative language.
Established

The poems incorporate several literary devices and figurative language which demonstrate creativity.
Excelling

The portfolio demonstrates varied and appropriate application of literary devices and figurative language discussed in class.
Poetry Reflection & Synthesis 25 pt

Beginning

Limited poetry elements are identified or described. The student shows no personality and this portion of the project is incomplete. None of the required components are incorporated.
Developing

Some poetry elements are identified and described. The student shows some personality and this portion of the project is described in some detail. Length is not met. Some of the required components are incorporated.
Established

Many poetry elements are identified and described. The student shows his/her personality and this portion of the project is described with many details demonstrating understanding of poetry. Length is mostly met. Most of the required components are incorporated.
Excelling

Many poetry elements are identified and described in great detail. The student's personality comes through the project. The student has taken the assignment and clearly has completed it in a unique form demonstrating his/her depth of poetry. Length is met. All is incorporated.
Grammar & Punctuation 25 pts.

Beginning

There are numerous spelling, diction, or grammar errors in the poems and/or paragraphs.
Developing

The poet's intended meaning is muddled by some spelling, diction or grammar errors in the poems and/or paragraphs.

Some spelling, diction or grammar mistakes are evident, but do not diminish meaning in poems and/or paragraphs.

Proper use of modern English spelling, diction and grammar are employed consistently throughout portfolio.
Peer Review/Revision 50 pts.

Beginning

The poet provides no evidence of peer review. The poet provides no evidence of revision.
Developing

The poet provides evidence of one or two peer review session. Questions do not go beyond, "Is it good?", "Do you like it?", or "Fix my grammar errors."Poet revises poem based solely on grammatical errors.
Established

The poet provides evidence of three peer review sessions. Questions begin to address poetry techniques, such as rhythm, rhyme, and imagery.Poet provides evidence of one or two revisions based on content, form, and poetic devices.
Excelling

The poet provides evidence of all peer review sessions. Questions address poetry techniques, such as rhythm, rhyme, and imagery.Poet provides evidence of multiple revisions and a willingness to experiment with form, content, and poetic devices.
Attractiveness/Neatness 25 pts.

Beginning

The poems and portfolio are messy or disorganized. Images are not included or related and does not enhance the project. The project was not in a folder or put together correctly.
Developing

The poems and portfolio show some thoughtfulness in their presentation. Images were not related or included but were used to enhance the presentation of the project. The folder is destroyed and not put together totally.
Established

The poems and portfolio are attractive in terms of design, layout and neatness and 1-2 images are included but not related to the poems. Overall presentation is good. The project was in a folder but it was semi-destroyed and put together mostly correctly.
Excelling

The portfolio is exceptionally attractive in terms of design, layout and neatness. All images used are related to the poems and enhances the overall presentation of the portfolio.The portfolio was submitted in a folder and put together correctly.
Biography/Dedication 25 pts.

Beginning

No poet biography is included. No dedication is included.
Developing

Poet biography and/or dedication is sparse and hastily written.
Established

Poet biography is adequate, but may be unimaginative, short, or unrelated to the writings in the portfolio.<BR>
Dedication is not related to the portfolio.
Excelling

Poet biography is clever, interesting, and well thought out. The writer took care to create a bio that served its intended purpose, which is to shed light on the writings in the portfolio. The dedication is thoughtful and meaningful.
