Introductions The students ability to effectively introduce the topic.	Mastery • Effectively introduces a topic, by restating the question. Has an attention grabbing sentence. Topic sentence is strong and clearly states the main idea. Stimulates interest.	Intermediate • Introduces a topic, by restating the question. Topic sentence is complete. The main idea is clearly stated.	Novice • Attempts to introduce a topic Topic sentence is poorly written. The main idea is not entirely clear.
Logical Order	Mastery • Groups related ideas together in a logical order. • Effectively develops the topic with 3 or more details from the text.	Intermediate • Groups some related ideas together to give partial organization to the writing. • Effectively develops the topic with 2 details from the text.	Novice • Ineffectively groups some related ideas together. • Effectively develops the topic with 1 details from the text.
Closure	Mastery • Effectively closes the paragraph Has an attention grabbing sentence. Conclusion is strong and clearly states the main idea.	Intermediate • Closes the paragraph Closure is complete. The main idea is clearly stated.	Novice • Provides a weak concluding statement or section.
Capitalization/Punctuation	Mastery Paragraph has 0-2 errors in punctuation and capitalization.	Intermediate Paragraph has 3-4 errors in punctuation and capitalization.	Novice Paragraph has 5-6 errors in punctuation and capitalization.
