Baseball/Softball Skill and Game Assessment 
Students will be assessed on specific skills and their understanding of the rules for the game of Batter Up (which is adapted from the sport baseball and softball).

Throwing

Side to target, transfer weight toward target, throws underhand and at waist height, follows through

Level 1

Demonstrates poor throwing cues and throws accurately to target less than 40% the time.
Level 2

Sometimes demonstrates proper throwing cues, steps toward the target with the opposite foot, and throws accurately to target 60% of the time.
Level 3

Often demonstrates proper throwing cues and throws accurately 70% of the time.
Level 4

Consistently demonstrates proper throwing cues and throws accurately 80% of the time.
Batting

Feet apart and staggered, knees bent, weight on back foot, transfer weight, level swing, follow through

Level 1

Demonstrates poor hitting cues and attempts to swing through the ball 40% of the time.
Level 2

Demonstrates proper body stance, keeps eye on ball, and swings through the ball 60% of the time.
Level 3

Often demonstrates ability to use proper hitting cues and swings throughly 70% of the time.
Level 4

Consistently demonstrates proper hitting cues and hits balls in the strike zone 80% of the time.
Catching

Eye on the ball, body square to ball, use two hands, cradle the ball

Level 1

Rarely in ready position, attempts to catch the ball 40% of time.
Level 2

Demonstrates proper stance, attempts to catch the ball 50 % of the time.
Level 3

Demonstrates and applies ready position, watches ball, and catches the ball 70% of the time.
Level 4

Consistently is in the ready position and keeps eye on the ball. Always uses two hands.
Base Running

Level 1

Attempts to run to first base and may overrun it. Rarely runs hard and purposefully toward first base.
Level 2

Runs to first base, tries to stay on base when the batter hits the ball, does not steal. Runs hard and purposefully toward first base 60% of the time.
Level 3

Consistently stays on base until the ball is hit, the runner touches every bag, and runs hard to every base 70% of the time.
Level 4

Base runner is always focused on the game, stays on base until the batter hits the ball. Runs hard to first base and on every base in the correct order, and touches every base, 80% of the time.
Game Play

Level 1

Does not understand rules. Will not play on a team. Has a poor attitude toward their teammates and other players.
Level 2
Level 3

Demonstrates a general understanding of the rules. Participates actively 75% of the time. Tries to take control of team. Follows safety rules.
Level 4

Consistently interprets and explains softball rules. Participates actively, and with a positive attitude. Follows safety rules, and maintains good sportsmanship. Works cooperatively withing their team.
