Scoring guide to measure how well someone has identified and explained a theme from a literary work. This uses a 1 - 5 scale to be in sync with our school's grade scale.

2 = basic, approaching proficient

You have identified a possible topic that could be a theme, but you have not made a clear statement.

AND/OR - the theme you tried to identify is based on just one section, part, or scene in the story, not the entire story
3 = proficient

You have identified a key theme from this story and clearly written it in a complete sentence.
4 - advanced

You have identified a key theme from this story in a concise way. Your theme statement could be used by others when examining other stories.
Evidence/Support

i = incomplete

You have little to no evidence to support your theme.
2 = basic, approaching proficient

You've given vague or general support for the theme.

AND/OR - your support came from just one part of the story: you haven't shown how the theme is throughout the whole novel.

AND/OR - evidence was too wordy or was not clearly connected to the main theme.
3 = proficient

You've mentioned 3 pieces of evidence from the story that connect to the theme you identified.
4 - advanced

You've mentioned 3+ pieces of evidence and the support you give goes beyond characters and plot. You have included other elements of literature as support (mood, tone, setting etc.)
