Student showed lack of consistency in the quality of sound. Usually struggles with pitch and control.

Several tone quality problems are apparent. Lack of correct embouchure and air control contribute to sound inconsistencies. Tuning is inconsistent.

Control of proper tone production is mostly evident. The player is sometimes taxed at extremes of range and dynamics. Tuning is mostly consistent

Student exhibits a superior tone quality. Tonal focus is rarely lost and timbre is uniform throughout. Tuning is correct and consistent throughout
Note Accuracy

Beginning

Student played few correct pitches in the piece, which made the piece unrecognizable
Developing

Several note errors made throughout the piece
Advancing

Minor note errors were made by the student, but this did not interfere with the overall musical flow of the piece.
Mastery

Very few note errors were made throughout the performance of this piece. It is performance ready
Rhythmic Accuracy

Beginning

Student was unable to maintain rhythmic integrity throughout the piece. The amount of rhythmic mistakes led to a breakdown in the rhythmic and metrical structure of the piece

Several rhythmic inaccuracies, not able to maintain rhythmic and metrical integrity

Major pauses in tempo, or speeding up and slowing down severely
Advancing

A reasonably consistent metrical structure was established. Student made minor rhythmic mistakes, but it did not interfere with the overall pulse of the music

Mastery

Very few rhythmic mistakes were made in the piece. Student was able to maintain a consistent rhythmic flow; established/ maintained a clear since of meter throughout the piece.

Articulation

Beginning

No attention to details of tonguing, slurring, staccato, or accents.
Developing

Several inaccuracies in articulation. Missed more than one or two slurs, staccato, or accent markings.
Advancing

Very minor inconsistency with tonguing/slurring. Occasional heavy articulation.
Mastery

Student very carefully observed all articulation markings. Appropriate weight was placed on each note.
Dynamics

Beginning

Student showed no change in the dynamic level
Developing

Some attempt at dynamic contrast however, the music was mostly unchanged
Advancing

Dynamics were mostly correct as indicated by the music. Only minor inconsistencies;
Mastery

Dynamic contrast was very clear and evident in the performance.
Musical Expression

Beginning

Student showed little attempt at expression or musical interpretation exhibited. Performance is muddled and mechanical. Exhibition of basic musical understanding is lacking
Developing

Some attempt is made to express melodic lines however, this is often ridged and uncomfortable with little communication of style or idiom
Advancing

Mostly uniform, sensitive phrasing exists with only an occasional mechanical approach. Minor lapses in uniformity of style, idiom and taste appear for short periods
Mastery

Student exhibits clear shaping of musical passages with well-defined and sensitive playing throughout. Valid, tasteful and idiomatically correct interpretation. All elements combine to interpret stylistically and communicate emotionally
