Content	Poor The author has no real purpose.	Fair Author has purpose that is unclear.	Very Good Story lacks creativity Author has purpose that is unclear or too broad.	Excellent Story is creative. Story has a clear purpose/ moral/ or lesson.
Audience	Poor Author has no connection to his/her audience. Book is not engaging or age appropriate.	Fair Author has not considered the needs of the audience. The book occasionally connects to the readers' lives. It is not or may not be entirely age appropriate.	Very Good Author has partially considered the needs of the audience. Book mostly connects to the readers' lives. It is nearly age appropriate.	Excellent Author has fully considered the needs of the audience, making sure that the book connects to the readers' lives. It is age appropriate, and fully engages the child.
Structure	Poor Children's book lacks any type of structure.	Fair Author has neither employed a unique layout nor a variety of sentences.	Very Good Author has either employed a unique layout or a variety of sentences but not both.	Excellent Author has employed a unique layout. He/she also uses a variety of sentences. (Similes, metaphors, dialogue, etc.)
Conventions	Poor Mistakes in mechanics inhibit understanding.	Fair Many mistakes are present and they begin to distract from the paper.	Very Good Some mistakes occur but does not distract from the understanding of the story.	Excellent Near flawless use of grammar and mechanics.
Word Choice	Poor Author did not make good word choices to make the sentences more interesting for his or her readers.	Fair Author could have chosen better words to make the sentences more interesting.	Very Good Author used OKAY words in each sentence that let readers understand the book.	Excellent Author used the BEST words in each sentence that added to the understanding of his/her book.
Illustrations	Poor There are pictures missing. The pages are incomplete.	Fair The illustrations do not relate to the words on each page and do not follow a logical and sequential order. The illustrations do not enhance the page or appearance of the story.	Very Good The illustrations may relate to the words on the page, but are slightly out of order. The illustrations mostly fill the page and are appropriate for the text.	Excellent The illustrations directly relate to the words on the page and they are presented in a logical and sequential order that helps the reader understand the story. The illustrations are very appropriate for the page both in size and text.
Guidelines	Poor The author has followed none of the guidelines.	Fair The author has followed some of the guidelines.	Very Good The author has followed most of the guidelines.	Excellent The author has followed all of the guidelines. He or she has included the following: Cover, Title page, Dedication page, has between 5-16 pages, has words and pictures on each page (front and back), and was handed in on time.
