The student's response does not demonstrate critical thought about the prompt. Student response is brief, only shows in immediate thought in response to the prompt.

The student's response demonstrates some critical thought. Student analyzed by contrast, comparison, synthesis or reflection his or her initial reaction to the prompt.
Level 3

The student's response demonstrates critical thought about the prompt. Student response shows thoughtful thinking, trying to consider different perspectives or compare deeply.
Level 4

The student's response demonstrates superior critical thought.
Use of Examples

Does the student's response demonstrate the use of supporting examples?

Level 1

Student response does not have any examples to support his or her ideas agreeing or disagreeing, or connecting and considering the prompt.
Level 2

Student response has at one example to support his or her first idea stated.
Level 3

Student response has well explained example to support his or her ideas.
Level 4

Student response has a developed response, or a couple of examples which support his or her ideas.
