Primary Post

Excellent

Excellent postings address the discussion forum questions and clearly show that the student understands course readings, class discussions, or other relevant information to the topic. Postings may include appropriate quotations and links to online resources. Postings are appropriately timed and meet or exceed the minimum number required. Posts are straight to the point, clearly worded, and respond to the question in a constructive manner.
Proficient

Discussion postings are timely and relevant, and the student meets (but does not exceed) the minimum number of postings per week. Student quotations suppport the main point and/or readings, and any given links are relevant to the topic. However, in some fashion the student does not address all elements of the prompt or does not post across the week (i.e. all posts are on the same day) to meet the Excellent standard.
Adequate

Posting may address one element of a prompt, but fails to completely deal with the topic. Postings are not distributed through the week (i.e. all postings are made in one day). Student does not post on all forum topics posted during any one week.
Substandard

Posting misses the main point (or points) of the question. Instead, discussion postings add nothing measurable to the forum. For example, many of the postings are "I think so too" or "I disagree" without elaboration of thinking or appropriate quotations. Or there is excessive quoting (from readings or websites) without any significant supporting evidence of the topic.
Missing

Made no attempt to effectively answer the question in the discussion forum.
Reply

Excellent

Responses are posted to postings/questions of other participants in a timely manner and enhance the class discussion. Responses use a variety of response techniques. The number of responses meet or exceed the standards required for each discussion, and the replies occur throughout the week.
Proficient

Responses include questions that move beyond yes or no answers, and elicit discussion with other participants. Response is timely for the most part. Uses appropriate number of response techniques across most of the week. However, in some way the student fails to meet the Excellent standard of replies.
Adequate

Uses limited response techniques. May be slow to respond to classmates' postings. Discussion replies do not move beyond yes or no answers, and fail to elicit responses from other participants that require critical thinking. Student may only respond a limited number of days during the week.
Substandard

Fails to use specific response techniques. Discussion replies include unclear questions that do not move beyond yes or no answers. Student fails to respond to classmates' postings. Responses fall short of the minimum required, are made once or twice a week, and/or occur near the end of the module (when others cannot respond).
Missing

Made no attempts to effectively respond to peers' postings in the discussion forum.
