Writing Math Word Problems
	Level 4 4 pts	Level 3 3 pts	Level 2 2 pts	Level 1 1 pts
Content	Level 4 Appropriate content is used for each word problem. Student clearly understands the mathematical concepts.	Level 3 Appropriate content is used for each word problem. Student shows some understanding of the mathematical concepts.	Level 2 Appropriate content may be used. Student shows little understanding of the mathematical concepts.	Level 1 Appropriate content is not observed. Student does not demonstrate an understanding of the mathematical concepts.
Organization	Level 4 The word problem is written in clear and coherent language. Proper vocabulary is present. The problem ends with a question.	Level 3 The word problem is written in clear and coherent language. The problem ends with a question.	Level 2 The word problem is not written in clear and coherent language. The question is not appropriate for the problem.	Level 1 The word problem is not written in clear and coherent language, or may not be present. The question for the problem is not present.
Illustration	Level 4 The illustrations precisely match the written problem and solution.	Level 3 The illustrations closely match the written problem and solution, but there is a minor error.	Level 2 The illustrations are not closely related to the written problem and solution or contain several errors.	Level 1 Illustrations are not present or are completely unrelated to the written problem and solution.
Solution	Level 4 The solution is correct and expressed both as a complete sentence and as a number sentence with a label.	Level 3 The solution is correct but is missing either the complete sentence or the label on the number sentence.	Level 2 The solution is correct but is expressed only as a number sentence with no label and/or as a sentence fragment.	Level 1 There is no solution for the problem.
Mechanics	Level 4 Proper language, spelling,capitalization and punctuation are present with no mistakes.	Level 3 Proper language, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation are present with no more than two mistakes.	Level 2 Proper language, spelling, capitalization and punctuation may be used, but there are more than two mistakes.	Level 1 Proper language, spelling, capitalization and punctuation are not observed.
