Central Idea or Image

Specificity and Intensity of Subject Matter

Excellent

Poetry is well-crafted. Attention-getting title and creatively-constructed, cohesive theme leave no doubt as to the focus. Grabs/transports reader's emotions, stirs reader's senses, and/or appeals to reader's intellect in a sustained manner. Encourages reader to make poetry his own.
Good

Poetry is generally thoughtful and cohesive; theme is easy to follow. Title, though appropriate, lacks creativity. Reader's emotions, senses, and/or intellect are stirred in a somewhat sustained manner.
Minimal

Poetry exhibits minimal cohesiveness; reader struggles to follow theme. Titles show little connection to poetry. There is little sustained effect on reader's emotions, senses, and/or intellect.
Poor

Untitled poetry random rather than cohesive. Reader is unable to perceive theme and is unaffected emotionally, sensibly, and/or intellectually.
Figurative Language

Examples: imagery, similes, metaphors, parallelism, alliteration

Excellent

Rich with a variety of fresh, memorable, mood-setting language which actively engage the reader. No wasted verbiage. Poetry is flowing, musical, vivid, intentional. In 4 or more lines.
Good

Usage of the language, shows some creative thought and balance; occasionally, devices are memorable. Poetry is sufficiently concise and cohesive so as to exhibit a general musical tone, in 3 lines.
Minimal

Minimal or unbalanced usage of figurative language tends toward wordiness. Although expressing some creativity, little is memorable. Slight musicality, in 2 lines.
Poor

Little or no usage of literary devices. Musicality nonexistent; poetry is wordy and/or blands, in 1 or none lines.
Mechanics

Spelling, Punctuation, Grammar

Excellent

With little exception, mechanical errors are absent. Punctuation/capitalization are highly effective in helping reader determine poetry's rhythm, in 4 or more lines.

Minimal
