Student identifies some key signatures (i.e. primary keys C, F and G) and can place some of the sharps or flats in their correct order for major keys on both the treble and bass clef, but needs assistance to develop a clearer understanding with all of the key signatures.

The student identifies key signatures and has a working knowledge of how to figure out what key signature is and has a working knowledge of how to figure out the placement of sharps and flats in the correct order.

Student identifies basic note values and can write them on the staff correctly, but still needs assistance to make corrections o to learn complex note values and notation devices (beams, flags and dots)

Student is able to identify note values and is beginning to independently write rhythm using their knowledge of note values.
Proficient

Student is able to use note values in the context of writing music independently most of the time, and has the ability to navigate rhythmic issues with problem solving skills to self-correct errors such as in a rhythm dictation exercise.
Accomplished

Student has a command over the use of note values and notation devices used to write them in various contexts. Utilizes correct beaming and flagging of notes and applies these skills to rhythm notation.

Musical Notation Drawing

Writing or applying musical notation in the correct manner: Clear line or space notes, stem placement, spacing, use of bar lines and other stylistic symbols and vocabulary, neatness (easy to ready).

Student has a basic knowledge of how music notation works and is able to write musical notation on both the treble and bass staves in a basic manner
