Inner Lives, External Contexts
This exercise allows you to unveil that which is typically hidden. A project entirely about you and your inner world. A photographic umbilical cord to your inner workings, personal narratives, personal ideas, and feeling states. A conceptual photograph is primarily a photographic and/or performative response rooted in an idea or concept.

Format

As related to the instruction to submit a minimum of four visual pieces of work.

Included 4 or more photos as directed.
Good

Used 4 photos as directed.
Acceptable

Used less than 4 photos.
Limited

Less than two photos submitted.
Concept

Conceptual photography is a type of photography that illustrates an idea. The ‘concept’ is both preconceived and, if successful, understandable in the completed image. These photographs are therefore produced to visualize a predetermined concept. Conceptual photography is all about ideas, symbols, and themes. It’s the the perfect way to express yourself and make the most of your creative freedom."

Excellent

A strong conceptual project driven by a premeditated concept that achieves general cohesion through the selection and arrangement of external elements, clear photographic direction, the presence of performance and/or the visualization of symbols, ideas and art direction as driven by a consistent premeditated concept.
Good

The project demonstrates a good conceptual approach as the photographer is driven to visualize a premeditated concept or idea. Yet, the execution of the concept could be more intentionally curated and directed through the performative visualization of ideas, art direction and/or the use of symbols within a consistent concept.
Acceptable

The photographer demonstrates an acceptable measure of the conceptual premeditative mode, yet it is not always clear how the photographic outcomes relate to or express the initial conceptual idea. Ideas, symbols, themes and art direction could be more intentionally approached.
Limited

The photographer does not appear to be working with a clear premeditative concept and falls short of expressing a concept through form, ideas, symbols, themes and art direction.
Artistic Statement |The Out of Frame Experience

How the photographer's written out of frame accompaniment and point of view contributes to the reading of the photographs and the cohesive nature of the project as a whole.

Excellent

The artist's statement eloquently articulates the photographer's conceptual point of view, the photographer's personal inner life that informs the concept and any relevant out of frame experience relevant to our reading of the project as a whole.

No spelling mistakes and successful use and accessible language.
Good

The artist's statement effectively articulates the photographer's conceptual point of view, the photographer's personal inner life and any relevant out of frame experience relevant to our reading of the project. Yet, some spelling mistakes could be found and the copy could generally do with some fine tuning and subediting.
Acceptable

The artist's statement hints at the presence of a deeper photographic point of view, a personal life and out of frame experience but the artist statement can be more deliberate and clear in it's verbal execution.
Limited

The artist's statement simply repeats what is already visible in the photographs and does not add much to our reading of the photographs.
Photo Descriptions

The intersection of image and text.

Excellent

Photo captions support the concept and/or describe what is happening within or beyond the photographic frame. Paradox is sometimes achieved through the use of pairing titles or captions with images that seem to work in contrast or tension and complicate the image by adding new layers of possible meaning through combining denotative and connotative elements. The photographer uses conceptual and/or specific language in captions that function as an element of cohesion between the photographs.
Good

Photo captions clearly describe details and concepts pertaining to what is happening in the frame but generally become merely illustrative or repetitive. Generally, the photo captions are good and function as an element of cohesion between the photos.
Acceptable

Photo captions lack concept, clarity, descriptiveness, and details, simply stating what is already apparent in the photographs. They marginally help the cohesiveness of the photo essay theme.
Limited

Photo captions were minimal or not included with project.
Creativity and Effort

Applied creativity and demonstrated effort.

Excellent

The project as a whole, including individual photographs used in the photo essay reflect an exceptional degree of creativity, going above expectations and demonstrate a high measure of demonstrated effort.
Good

The project as a whole, including the pictures used in the photo essay reflect a good degree of creativity, and demonstrate a good measure of demonstrated effort.
Acceptable

The project as a whole, including the pictures used in the photo essay reflect an acceptable degree of creativity, and demonstrated effort.
Limited

The project as a whole reflects a general lack of creativity and demonstrated effort.
Composition

Camera angle, subject placement, arrangement of formal elements, distance, general application of the elements of design, use of environment.

Excellent

In general, the composition of all the photographs is highly achieved and intentionally contributes to the consistent aesthetic arrangement of formal elements in this project as a whole.
Good

In general, the composition of most photographs seem intentional and generally contribute to a generally good arrangement of formal elements in the project as a whole.
Acceptable

In general, composition of the photographs are acceptable but leave room for alternative applications of formal arrangements and can be improved through applying heightened intentionality to aesthetics in the project as a whole.
Limited

In general, the composition falls short of intentionality and formal elements do not appear to contribute to sound aesthetic photographs.
Personal Inner World

Excellent

The project succeeds in reflecting a strong photographic umbilical cord to the photographer's inner workings, voice, personal narratives, personal ideas, and feeling states, becoming a mirror for the personal.
Good

The project works within a personal medium and succeeds in reflecting a measure of the photographer's inner workings, voice , personal narratives, personal ideas, and/or feeling states.
Acceptable

The project works within a personal medium and succeeds in reflecting a fair measure of the photographer's inner workings, voice , personal narratives, personal ideas, and/or feeling states.
Limited

The personal dimension of the project is rather limited and can be more intentionally approached.
