Ballroom Dance Assessment 
The dances will be graded upon its set up that includes ability to incorporate the right combination of steps and moves in accordance with the music, coordination, teamwork, posture, and energy.

Rhythm/Tempo

Ability to stay in time with the dance, and the music to an extent.

LEVEL 0

The individual/pair/group attempts to keep a rhythm, but gets off beat and speeds up or falls behind often. Steps are not in rhythm at all.
LEVEL 1

The individual/pair/group shows a basic understanding of tempo and beat, but on occasion falls behind and/or speeds up in places or makes errors in rhythm.
LEVEL 2

The individual/pair/group is extremely accurate in showing basic understanding of tempo and beat. Never falters on their steps.
Knowledge movement/choreography

Ability to execute the movements. Correct placement of hands, feet, legs.

LEVEL 0

Not Yet: Posture was lacking, hands were not placed in the right spots, and steps were off.
LEVEL 1

Almost: Posture was pretty good, positioning was fairly accurate, and the steps were pretty close.
LEVEL 2

Yes! Demonstrates excellent knowledge of the choreography with accuracy. The student is extremely prepared and knows the routine.
Execusion of Steps

Ability to execute the required dance moves.

LEVEL 0

Student almost never executes steps correctly; gets confused easily.


Executes 2 or fewer steps successfully.
LEVEL 1

Student mostly correctly executes steps correctly. Students can easily recover if there is a misstep. Can get confused with a few moves.

Executes 3 - 5 steps successfully.
LEVEL 2

Student executes all steps.



Executes 5 - all steps successfully.
Shows Energy/Focus

Focused and intent on performing for the entirety of the dance and connecting with the music instead of going through the motion.

LEVEL 0

Individual/Pair/group is not serious. Looking around showing little interest in performing.
LEVEL 1

Some energy and focus is shown throughout the performance.
LEVEL 2

Individual/Pair/group demonstrates high level of energy and focus throughout the performance.
Level and Space

Ability to utilize the space.

LEVEL 0

Uses little of the space possible.
LEVEL 1

Uses one or two pathways and patterns in their dance.
LEVEL 2

Uses various pathways in their dance movements. Incorporates well-defined patterns in their dance composition.
Overall Performance

Did the performance demonstrate effort and preparation?

LEVEL 0

Dance looked as though the Individual/Pair/group did not utilize rehearsal time during class. Not insync at all.
LEVEL 1

Dance looked like the Individual/Pair/group utilized some of rehearsal time in class. Not quite together.
LEVEL 2

Dance looked as though the individual/Pair/group fully utilized rehearsal time.
Solid performance.
