Slave Rebellions Presentation Grade 5 Social Studies Research Project This rubric is designed to correspond with Michigan Social Studies standards for fifth grade on the European Slave Trade and Slavery in Colonial America. 5-U2.2.2 Describe the life of enslaved Africans and free Africans in the American Colonies. 5-U2.2.3 Describe how Africans living in North America drew upon their African past (e.g. sense of family, role of oral tradition) and adapted elements of new cultures to develop a distinct African-American culture. Facts and Sources	Level 4 Students display a variety of correct facts. Student uses teacher provided resources as well as own resources. Students included a Bibliography that includes ALL sources of information.	Level 3 Student displays a variety of mostly correct facts. Good use of provided resources.	Level 2 Student displays facts, mostly correct. Some use of provided resources.	Level 1 Students have limited facts and have no sources cited.
Research and Understanding	Level 4 Student did significant research and it is entirely in their own words. Student demonstrates a deep understanding of their project.	Level 3 Student did a lot of research and it is presented in their own words. Student shows a clear understanding of their project.	Level 2 Student did some research but most information is not in their words. Student shows little understanding of their project.	Level 1 Student did inadequate research. Student does not understand their own project.
Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation	Level 4 Student has no errors in spelling or punctuation. Writing style adds to the understanding of the topic and/or material.	Level 3 Project uses mostly correct spelling and punctuation. Writing style makes topic and/or material understandable.	Level 2 Project has some correct spelling and punctuation. Writing style makes topic and/or material unclear.	Level 1 Project has little or no punctuation or spelling. Topic or material unclear due to excessive errors.
Project setup	Level 4 Followed all directions for set up. Project is very well organized and tidy. It is apparent that student(s) took time on project and it is visually pleasing to the eye.	Level 3 Followed most directions for set up. Project is well organized and mostly tidy.	Level 2 Followed some directions given for set up. Project needs some organizational improvement and could be tidied up.	Level 1 Did not follow directions for set up. Project layout is unorganized and messy.
