5th Grade: Pillow Evaluation 
This rubric is for a grade 5 pillow project in which 7 different sewing techniques were demonstrated: Layout, Pinning, Cutting, Machine Sewing of seams, stuffing, and Hand Sewing: Invisible stitch and Running Stitch.

Use of Sewing Machine

Advanced

Knew how to thread machine, thread loaded bobbin, wind a bobbin, label parts of the machine, and operate it successfully. Were able to troubleshoot problems and were a help to others.

Needed minimal assistance with sewing machine.

Needed help with sewing machine occasionally. Problems encountered were due to improper use.
Basic/Minimal

Needed help with sewing machine regularly. Had difficulty understanding proper operation and use.
Fabric, Pinning and Cutting

Advanced

Demonstrated proper use of layout. Pinning was consistent during cutting and sewing. Cutting was smooth, accurate and added to a superior quality.
Proficient

Fabrics were cut on grain. Pinning was accurate in most cases. Cutting is accurate with some jagged edges.
Low Proficient

Some cutting was not accurate. Pinning was not always utilized during construction.
Basic/Minimal

Pinning was not effective. Cutting was not accurate and affects construction. Material is uneven and jagged.
Seams and Construction

Advanced

All seams sewn straight with proper seam allowance, back-stitched, and with seam finishes. All seams properly pressed.
Proficient

Few errors with seam allowances, back-stitching, and seam finishes. Most seams properly pressed.
Low Proficient

Several errors with seam allowances, back-stitching, and seam finishes. Seam not properly pressed. Some small holes are present.
Basic/Minimal

Little attention to seam allowances, back-stitching, and seam finishes. Seams not pressed. Obvious holes are present.
Sewing Techniques

Advanced

All sewing techniques demonstrated are of high quality. Invisible stitch is invisible and running stitch on felt is secure and consistent in length of stitch. All techniques were done properly and with skill.
Proficient

Many sewing techniques demonstrated in pillow are of good quality. Most techniques were done properly and with care. Hand stitching on felt is mostly consistent with some variation.
Low Proficient

Many sewing techniques demonstrated require improvement. Sewing techniques are lacking proficiency.
Basic/Minimal

Intended competency to demonstrate sewing techniques is not evident. Not all techniques were attempted.
Appearance

Advanced

Project construction was correctly shaped as a square. Perfect amount of stuffing added to pillow filling out corners. Seams match correctly. The project has a polished look and is pleasing to the eye. *Added buttons, ribbons, or other special effects.
Proficient

Project has few problems with shaping and alignment. Seams intersect closely. The project has been completed with attention to detail.
Low Proficient

The project has some problems with shaping and alignment. Seams are obviously mismatched. The project is lacking visual appeal in some areas.
Basic/Minimal

The project has problem areas with shaping and alignment. Seam matching is not appropriate. Visually, the project is not pleasing. Not enough stuffing or overstuffed.
Time management

Advanced

Project was completed on time or early. Student used class time efficently and stayed on task.
Proficient

Effectively used class time and remained on task with few reminders.
Low Proficient

Class time was not always used efficiently and student was often off task.
Basic/Minimal

Did not use class time efficiently and required many reminders to stay on task.
Following Directions

Advanced

The proper steps were accurately followed and were able to assist and teach other students.
Proficient

Followed most directions and it did not affect final project.
Low Proficient

Had difficulty following directions and it shows in final project.
Basic/Minimal

Did not follow directions and had to spend much time correcting mistakes made.
Safety Practices

Advanced

Safety practices were consistently adhered to and were responsible by helping to remind others to be safe as well.
Proficient

Almost always followed safety expectations.
Low Proficient

Followed safety practices some of the time and needed reminders to practice safety practices at other times.
Basic/Minimal

Difficulty with safety issues and remembering rules and expectations which put yourself and others at risk of being injured.
Space Management

Advanced

Sewing area and tool box were always left neat and tidy, making sure that correct objects were in tool box, sewing machine area was left clean, threads and bobbins put away, chair pushed in, and project in drawer. Also, often helped others to do the same.
Proficient

Almost always left sewing area clean and tidy with tool box organized and project stowed away properly in drawer.
Low Proficient

Needed many reminders to put things where they belonged before leaving class to ensure an organized tool box and clean sewing area.
Basic/Minimal

Often could not find materials, left sewing station a mess with tool box objects missing, and/or project not put away.
Attitude

Advanced

Always displayed a positive attitude about doing your best and helped others have a positive attitude as well.
Proficient

Usually had a positive attitude in class even when faced with challenges.
Low Proficient

Often struggled to find a positive attitude, usually complaining about work that needed to be done.
Basic/Minimal

Negative attitude was displayed most of the time about being at FCS and putting an effort into sewing your pillow.
