Topic Sentence	Level 4 Powerful, well-written topic sentences that strongly introduces the topic of the paragraph.	Level 3 Interesting topic sentence that strongly introduces the topic of the paragraph.	Level 2 Simple topic sentence that introduces the topic of the paragraph.	Level 1 Topic sentence is missing or unrelated to other ideas.
Supporting Details	Level 4 Provides more than 4 supporting details, that are well-explained and clearly linked to the topic.	Level 3 Provides 3 supporting details, which are all on topic and are directly linked to the topic.	Level 2 Provides 2 supporting details OR 3 ideas, but not all on topic.	Level 1 Provides only 1 supporting detail OR more than 1 but not on topic.
Concluding Sentence	Level 4 Concluding sentence restates and adds to the topic sentence in a powerful, creative way.	Level 3 Concluding sentence restates topic sentence in an interesting way.	Level 2 The paragraph has a closing sentence that strays from the main idea OR a concluding sentence that too closely restates the topic sentence.
