	Effective Reader understands and easily follows the writer’s expression of ideas. 10 pts	Adequate Reader understands writer’s ideas. 8 pts	Marginal Reader occasionally has difficulty understanding or following the writer’s ideas. 6 pts	Inadequate Reader has difficulty identifying or following the writer’s ideas. 4 pts
Response to Topic 20 %	Effective Presents a clearly focused main idea that addresses the topic.	Adequate Uses the writing prompt to establish a main idea.	Marginal Addresses the prompt, though the focus may shift.	Inadequate Attempts to address prompt but with little or no success in establishing a focus.
Research/ argument 20 %	Effective Presents very thorough research and uses the research to create a very strong case for an alternative solution.	Adequate Did good research and uses the research quite effectively to create a convincing alternative solution.	Marginal Did some research and attempted to create a case for an alternative solution.	Inadequate Demonstrates little or no research and does not present a coherent case for an alternative.
