Student Involvement	Beginning Student didn't or rarely participates.	Approaching Participates some of the time during the book discussions,and seems to have little grasp about the content of the book.	Meeting Student participates several times throughout the discussion, and seems to have a firm grasp of the contents of the book (characters, events, behaviors, etc)	Excelling Student demonstrates leadership roles in the discussion by prompting or questioning others, seems to have a firm grasp of the contents of the book (characters, events, behaviors, etc)
Knowledge of Book	Beginning Student showed little or no knowledge of the book.<BR> Student didn't contribute any thought about the book.	Approaching Student showed some knowledge of the book.<BR> Student contributed some thoughts about the book.	Meeting Student showed appropriate knowledge of the book.<BR> Student contributed many thoughts about the book and events.	Excelling Student demonstrates an indepth knowledge of the book they are reading, and can provide meaningful and thorough explanations of events in the book.
Group Behavior	Beginning Student was off task, and did not show respect to other members of the group.	Approaching Student had difficulty staying on task, and had difficulty being respectful to other members of the group.	Meeting Student was on task the majority of the time, and was respectful to other members of the group by listening most of the time to ideas and opinions.	Excelling Student was on task at all times, and was respectful to other members of the group by listening to ideas and opinions.
Use of Text	Beginning Student made no effort to include the text.	Approaching Student vaguely referred to specifics but no text was incorporated, or use of text is forced and superficial.	Meeting Text was used 1-2 times during discussion in an attempt to enhance and expand discussion.	Excelling Text was used 3 or more times during discussion in meaningful, insightful ways.
