	Unacceptable 0 pts	Acceptable 5 pts	Good 8 pts	Excellent 10 pts
Learning Objectives 10 % Many texts will list the chapter objectives in outline form. Are the essential objectives clearly presented and reinforced by the organization of the chapter text?	Unacceptable LOs are not easily discernible. Some obvious learning objectives that should be addressed are missing.	Acceptable LOs can be determined from the text, though they may not be explicitly stated. The most obvious learning objectives are addressed, but some topics may be lacking.	Good LOs are clearly presented either as a preview, or within subsections of the text. All expected topics are present. There may be too many objectives, but there are not too few.	Excellent LOs are clearly presented and reinforced throughout the text. All expected topics are presented as well as some additional topics of interest. Optional objectives can be clearly distinguished from essentials.
Critical Thought 15 % The text should go beyond just presenting facts. In-Chapter Assessment Tools 10 % For effective studying, students benefit from questions that assess their understanding as they read.	Unacceptable Text is presented without sufficient assessment in the chapter. What assessments are present are more likely to confuse than help.	Acceptable Some limited assessment is provided, but not all learning objectives may be assessed in text.	Good Attention to every LO is given with assessments in the chapter. Acceptable Provides coverage of some advanced topics, though the focus is on the basics. Most information is presented without detail, but important concepts are presented well.	Good Thorough detail is provided for most concepts. Advanced topics are presented with sufficient clarity to draw interest and provide a good starting point for further research if desired.	Excellent The text covers all subjects thoroughly and provides significant insight into recent research and advanced concepts. Advanced students would find the text to be a great reference for future majors courses.
Support for Average Students 15 % What will the average student get from this text? Is the text simple and clear with a focus on the essentials?	Unacceptable Average students are likely to be overwhelmed by the text. Excessive detail or complexity obscures the most essential concepts.	Acceptable While there may be some difficult areas, the text as a whole is accessible to the average biology major.	Good The essential concepts are easy to identify in the text and are presented clearly so that the average student should be able to understand them. more advanced subjects are introduced in a way that will not interfere with an understanding of the essentials.	Excellent The text does an excellent job of presenting both the basics and advanced topics so that even an average student will gain insight into concepts beyond the introductory level.
Illustrations 10 %	Unacceptable Illustrations are not engaging to learners. Some essential concepts may not have associated illustrations.	Acceptable Illustrations are somewhat engaging to learners. Essential concepts are illustrated.	Good Illustrations are engaging to learners and add significantly to an understanding of important concepts.	Excellent Illustrations are of exceedingly high quality. It is possible to understand important concepts from figures alone
Overall Readability 20 %	Unacceptable Text does not flow well. The writing style leads to confusion and/or boredom.	Acceptable Though not inspiring, the text is understandable at least.	Good The text is clear and comprehensible at all times. A single reading should provide an understanding of multiple ideas and encourage further interest.	Excellent The text greatly increases interest in the subject matter while providing clear explanations of even difficult concepts.
Supplements to the text 20 % If available, online and CD supplements relating to the same chapters should be rreviewed as well

Electronic Learning Resources 50 % Online supplements to the text.	Unacceptable Does not provide sufficient electronic learning resources and tools. Supplements may have frequent errors or bugs.	Acceptable Provides some electronic learning resources and tools. Some chapters may not be fully supported, but what is present is functional and largely accurate. Limited self-assessment.	Good Provides functional and accurate electronic learning resources and tools. All chapters are supported and all subsections are sufficiently addressed. Self-assessment tools direct students toward important concepts.	Excellent Electronic resources are of the highest quality and integrate well with the text. A student using electronic and online supplements would be able to learn almost any concept covered and self-assess with confidence.
Instructor's Resources 50 % Test Banks, lecture notes, multimedia offerings	Unacceptable Insufficient materials are offered.	Acceptable Some materials are offered that could assist in preparing lectures or tests.	Good Materials offered are of high quality and would greatly assist in teaching these subjects and/or preparing quizzes/tests/in-class activities.
