Creating Your Own Sonnet Creating Your Own Sonnet The best way to gain appreciation for the sonnet form is to write one of your own. Choose a topic that is import to you and write a Shakespearean sonnet expressing your feelings and thoughts. Creating a Sonnet
	Fair 3 pts	Good 4 pts	Excellent 5 pts
Meter The writer either succeeds in using the appropriate meter or does not.	Fair Most of the sonnet is not written entirely in iambic pentameter, e.g. too many syllables on a given line, etc.	Good Most of the sonnet is written in the correct meter except for a line or two.	Excellent Sonnet is written entirely in iambic pentameter.
Format Writer consistently follows the accepted practices for English-style sonnet. Also, writer utilizes either the quatrain or octave/sestet for their accorded purpose, e.g. the final couplet provides a concluding remark, etc.	Fair Sonnet's parts do not demonstrably fulfill the requirements of either the quatrains or octave/sestet, e.g. first quatrain establishes the subject; second quatrain introduces the sonnet's theme, etc.	Good Sonnet's parts do demonstrably fulfill the requirements for either an English or Italian-style sonnet; however, the sonnet is still rough and/or vague in parts (requiring polish to be brought up to an "excellent" standard).	Excellent Sonnet's parts do demonstrably and exceptionally fulfill the requirements for either an English or Italian-style sonnet.
Uses literary devices: figurative language-i.e. imagery, similes, metaphors, etc.	Fair Literary devices are few and weak. OR No use of literary devices.	Good Literary devices are evident and purposeful.	Excellent Literary devices are varied and exceptionally effective.
Spelling and Grammar	Fair Three more spelling and/or grammatical mistakes in combination.	Good One to two spelling and/or grammatical mistakes in combination.	Excellent No spelling or grammatical mistakes.
