Clinical scenario

Provides a brief background on the population, condition, and intervention of interest.

Minimally Fulfilled

Minimally addresses some of the required elements.

Scenario states and identifies the main problem/issue but does not adequately explain why or how it is a problem.
Partially Fulfilled

Minimally addresses all of the required elements.

Scenario identifies the main problem/issue and subsidiary aspects of the question.

Articulates an understanding of the scope of the problem and the related issues involved.
Mostly Fulfilled

Addresses all of the required elements.

Scenario identifies the main problem/issue and subsidiary aspects of the question.

Articulates an understanding of the scope of the problem and the related issues involved.
Fully Fulfilled

Addresses all of the required elements with considerable effectiveness and clarity.

Scenario articulates the scope of the problem and associated issues.

Identifies multiple embedded or implicit issues, and addresses their relations to the main problem.
Focused clinical question

Contains all elements of a relevant PICO question.

Minimally Fulfilled

Clinical question does have practical importance but is not relevant to the evidence gathered and evaluated.
Partially Fulfilled

Clinical question is client oriented, has practical importance, is relevant but is too broad.
Mostly Fulfilled

Clinical question is client oriented, practical, specific enough to guide an electronic evidence search and is relevant to the evidence gathered.
Fully Fulfilled

Clinical question is client oriented, practical, specific enough to guide an electronic evidence search and is relevant to the evidence.

Question written is a way that clearly communicates the question type, and the population, intervention, and outcome(s) of interest. All PICO elements are evident.
Clinical bottom line

Reports a critical evaluation of the evidence reviewed and includes clinical judgment on how the results could be generalized to an identified client(s)

Minimally Fulfilled

Minimally addresses ONE of the required elements
Partially Fulfilled

Minimally addresses all of the required elements
Mostly Fulfilled

Addresses all of the required elements in a clearly articulated manner.
Fully Fulfilled

Addresses all of the required elements in a clearly articulated manner AND articulates an understanding of the scope of the problem.
Systematic Search

EBP systematic search procedure is evaluated here. Student provided evidence of an efficient search using multiple scholarly databases. FINAL, specific search terms, combining strategy, and databases queried must be included: (1) databases and sites searched, (2) search terms, (3) limits used, (4) inclusion and exclusion criteria

Minimally Fulfilled

Discussed the rationale but did not discuss the data collection specifics or vice versa.
Partially Fulfilled

Discussed the rationale and most of the data collection specifics (i.e. key terms, databases, years included, additional inclusion and exclusion criteria)
Mostly Fulfilled

Discussed the rationale and all of the data collection specifics, some of the appraisal tools.
Fully Fulfilled

Discussed the rationale and all of the data collection specifics, the appraisal tools and analysis strategies.
Critical Appraisal

Demonstrates ability to appraise and synthesize the research literature. Student communicates methodological quality of studies reviewed and describes why a study is of high of low quality based on McMaster Critical Appraisal Guidelines.

Minimally Fulfilled

Captures mostly appropriate evidence but does not consistently apply relevant thinking (e.g. comparing, classifying, abstracting, analyzing, summarizing) in presenting the various evidence.
Partially Fulfilled

Applies relevant thinking some of the time specifically 1) can classify the literature but does not adequately analyze or summarize the main themes; 2) completed but did not integrate the McMaster critical appraisal results ; 3) can identify elements of validity but with limited effectiveness.
Mostly Fulfilled

Applies critical appraisal skills with considerable effectiveness.

Integrates McMaster critical appraisal results with considerable effectiveness.

Demonstrates considerable knowledge of concepts, technical terminology and procedures.
Fully Fulfilled

Applies critical appraisal skills with a high degree of effectiveness.

Effectively integrates McMaster critical appraisal results within the CAT.

Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of concepts, technical terminology and procedures.
Interpretation of Results

Demonstrates ability to integrate research into high quality practice recommendations based on best available evidence.

Minimally Fulfilled

Conclusions are drawn and recommendations are provided, but without discussion of implications or consequences.
Partially Fulfilled

Conclusions and recommendations are stated and discussed.

Implications and consequences of the conclusion are reflected in context, relative to assumptions, and supporting evidence.
Mostly Fulfilled

Stated recommendations are based on a thorough examination of evidence, a clear explanation of reasonable alternatives, or an evaluation of possible consequences.

Conclusions and recommendations are reasonable given the strength of evidence reviewed.

Both clinical and statistical significance of the findings are discussed.
Fully Fulfilled

Stated recommendations are based on a thorough examination of evidence, a clear explanation of reasonable alternatives, and an evaluation of possible consequences.

Conclusions and recommendations are congruent with the strength of evidence reviewed, and an appropriate interpretation of both clinical and statistical significance of the findings.
Evidence of your understanding

Evidence of your understanding of the relevant literature and major concepts for your selected question. Includes implications for practice, education, and future research.

Minimally Fulfilled

Applies relevant thinking skills (e.g. comparing, classifying, abstraction, analyzing, criticizing) in presenting information but without clear reference to context, assumptions, data, and evidence.
Partially Fulfilled

Applies relevant thinking skills (e.g. comparing, classifying, abstracting, analyzing, criticizing, evaluating) in presenting information with reference to context, assumptions, data, and evidence.

Suggests implications and consequences but without development.
Mostly Fulfilled

Applies relevant thinking skills (e.g. comparing, classifying, abstracting, analyzing, criticizing, evaluating) in presenting information with reference to context, assumptions, data, and evidence.

Identifies and clearly discusses at least one implication and consequence by considering at least one various relevant assumption, context, datum, and evidence.
Fully Fulfilled

Applies relevant thinking skills in presenting information.

Identifies and clearly discusses multiple implications and consequences by considering various relevant assumptions, contexts, data, and evidence.

Draws conclusions based on reasons, arguments, and evidence
