Criteria for Interviewing Skills

Posture/Length 5 pts	Poor Role play submitted late and/or was 5 or less minutes in length. The counselor used closed uninviting posture with little to no eye contact. Their tone made little connect with the client and	Fair Role play submitted late and was 5-10 minutes in length. The counselor used minimal eye contact, was limited in their use of facial expression or used too much, and appeared disinterested or lacking in empathy	Good Role play submitted on time and 10 - 15 minutes. The counselor showed empathy, made good eye contact, expressed themselves through appropriate facial expression and gestures much of the time.	Great Role play submitted on time and 15 - 20 minutes. The counselor showed a master of skill in the area of empathy, eye contact, facial expression & gestures, physical distance and voice tone
Facilitation/Minimal Encouragers 5 pts	Poor The counselor never facilitated further discussion by the interviewee. Interviewer speech was difficult to hear or understand and interviewer did not pay attention to the client.	Fair The counselor used minimal facilitation to further discussion by the interviewee. Interviewer interrupted the interviewee and did not pay close attention to the client.	Good The counselor used facilitation some of the time, though awkward at times. Interviewee seemed hesitant to make more meaningful statements. Interviewer paid some attention to the Interviewee.	Great The counselor used facilitation well. Interviewee responded with more meaningful statements. Interviewer did not speak too fast or too slowly. Interviewer was attentive to the answers of the interviewee.
Reflective Statements 5 pts	Poor The Counselor never used reflective statements to draw out interviewees feelings.	Fair The counselor used one or more reflective statements to draw out interviewees feelings.	Good The counselor used reflective statements often and consistently to draw out interviewees feelings.	Great The counselor used reflective statements effectively to draw out interviewees feelings and continue session.
Paraphrasing/Summarizations 5 pts	Poor Counselor never paraphrased or summarized what the interviewee was saying.	Fair Some of the time the Counselor paraphrased or summarized, but it was inconsistent and with some parroting.	Good The counselor paraphrased and summarized often and consistently without parroting the interviewees words.	Great The counselor used paraphrasing and summarizing meaningfully and effectively to facilitate the session.
Questions 5 pts	Poor Interviewer used questions frequently that were not for clarification.	Fair Interviewer used questions more than open-ended statements.	Good Interviewer did not use any questions other than those for clarification.	Great
Counseling Relationship 5 pts	Poor The counselor does not sufficiently develop and deepen the counseling relationship	Fair The counselor shows some ability in establishing counseling relationship	Good The counselor is adept in conveying positive regard, warmth, non-judgmental attitude, empathy, genuineness, and congruence	Great The counselor demonstrates an ability to develop and deepen the relationship by displaying empathy, respect, positive regard, authenticity, and congruence
