Paraphrase

Excellent

Paraphrase is clear and intelligible, and stays close to structure of the original sonnet. There are no misinterpretations, incorrect translations, or over-modernization of Shakespeare's ideas.
Good

Student misunderstands and incorrectly paraphrases 1-2 lines, but is able to paraphrase in structure without over-modernizing the language.
Fair

There are more than two misinterpretations that affect the meaning of the sonnet overall. Language used in the paraphrase is too casual.
Poor

Extremely convoluted or incomplete paraphrase.
Score
Scansion

Excellent

Text is spaced well to make it easy to follow scansion. Scansion marks are careful and legible, and there are no errors related to necessary pronunciation of words.
Good

Text is spaced well, and scansion marks are legible. There are 1-2 errors and/or questionable scansion choices (overuse of pyrrhic/spondee, for example).
Fair

Scansion marks are not made with precision, so it is difficult to differentiate between stressed and unstressed marks. There are 3-4 clear errors in rhythm.
Poor

Text is not properly spaced, making it hard too hard to follow clearly. 5 or more errors in rhythm.
Score
Figures of Sound

Excellent

All assigned figures of sound (alliteration, assonance, consonance and onomatopoeia) are marked clearly and the included key has been followed. It is clear that each line has been considered thoughtfully.
Good

Assigned figures of speech are marked clearly, but some lines have not been considered. Key is included.
Fair

Some figures of speech are marked, but major elements are missed, indicating a need to look more deeply at the text. Key is included.
Poor

Figures are not marked as indicated in key and/or there is no key. A majority of elements are missed.
Score

All images are clearly marked.
Good
