This rubric will be used to determine a child's reading letter grade at the completion of a quarter of study.

Below Average

The reader is unable to provide major points in the text or make accurate predictions. The reader is unable to provide a main idea or give supporting details from the text.
Remedial

The reader has difficulty providing major points in the text and is unable to make accurate predictions. The reader is not able to distinguish the main idea or give supporting details from a variety of genres of text.
Grade Level

The reader can recall some major points in the text and make predictions. The reader can distinguish the main idea and give some supporting details from a variety of genres of text.
Above Average

The reader can recall major points in the text and make and revise predictions about what is read. The reader can distinguish the main idea and supporting details from a variety of genres of text.
Accuracy

Standard 1: Reading: Word Recognition

(Reutzel, Cooter, 2009)
Below Average

Word recogntion accuracy is poor, generally below 85%. Reader clearly struggles in decoding words. Makes multiple decoding attempts for many words, usally without success.
Remedial

Word recognition accuracy is marginal: 86-90%. Reader struggles with many words. Many unsuccessful attempts at self correction.
Grade Level

Word recognition is good: 91 - 95%. Reader self-corrects successfully.
Above Average

Word recognition accuracy is excellent: 96 - 100%. Self corrections are few but successful, as nearly all words are read correctly on initial attempt.
Fluency

Reading level is below grade level (Level L). Rate of oral reading is between 0 and 52 words per minute.
Remedial

Reading level is below grade level (Level L). Rate of oral reading is between 53 and 76 words per minute.
Grade Level

Read aloud grade-level (Level L) appropriate literacy and informational texts fluently and accurately and with appropriate timing, change in voice, and expression. Rate of oral reading is between 77 and 109 words per minute.
Above Average

Read aloud grade-level (Level L or higher) appropriate literacy and informational texts fluently and accurately and with appropriate timing, change in voice, and expression. Rate of oral reading is above 110 words per minute for quarter 1.
Vocabulary

Students will meet the required elements for Indiana's Academic Standards for
Standard 1: Reading: Vocabulary and Concept Development
Below Average

Uses basic word families. Concentrates on single syllable words. Unable to determine the meanings of words using knowledge of synonyms, antonyms, homophones, and homographs.
Remedial

Does not use more difficult word families when reading unfamiliar words. Struggles when reading words with several syllables. Unable to determine the meanings of words using knowledge of synonyms, antonyms, homophones, and homographs.
Grade Level

Know and uses more difficult word families when reading unfamiliar words. Reads some words with several syllables. Determines the meanings of words using knowledge of synonyms, antonyms, homophones, and homographs.
Above Average
