1st attempt

Gathers all equipment on first attempt without prompting:

Catheter tubing clamp
Syringe with needleless cannula
Sterile specimen container
Antimicrobial wipe

On 2nd attempt student:

Informs the patient that a specimen is needed but does not provide patient education or a rationale for the procedure

Does not clamp drainage tube for 15 mins prior to collecting specimen

On 1st attempt student:

Educates the patient about the procedure but fails to provide a rationale

Does not provide patient education or rationale for procedure

Does not clamp drainage tube for 15 mins prior to collecting specimen

Completes all steps without error on 2nd attempt

1st attempt

Educates patient on the procedure and the rationale for the procedure

Clamps drainage tube for 15 mins prior to collecting specimen

Rationale: Ensures that urine specimen is adequate

On 2nd attempt student:

Omits any step in procedure

Commits an error and does not correct it during the 2nd attempt with no prompting

On 1st attempt student:

Omits a step or commits an error and fails to correct it without prompting

Completes all steps without error on 2nd attempt

Wipe port with antimicrobial wipe

Insert needless cannula at 30-45 degree angle into port

Allow urine to accumulate in tubing (2ml)

Specimen less than 2ml: Clamp tube for 30 mins, Reposition pt,Check tube for kinks

Aspirate urine sample and then remove syringe

Wipe port with antimicrobial wipe, un-clamp tube

Empty syringe into sterile container

Send to lab within 15 mins or refrigerate
