Novel: Chapter Summary

Students will read weekly chapter assignments and complete a five to seven sentence summary for each chapter. Each paragraph will include the main idea and supporting details for each chapter read. The goal of this rubric is to obtain a better understanding of how to write a great summary and locate the main idea within a chapter, while using background knowledge (BK) and textual clues (TC) to identify unknown or current vocabulary words.

Novel Summaries
	Excellent 3 pts	Good 2 pts	Needs Improvement 1 pts
Summary Students write a summary for the chapters they have read. They will list each Chapter.	Excellent Student response has summarized each chapter using 5-7 sentences.	Good Student response has summarized chapter with 3-4 sentences.	Needs Improvement Student response has summarized chapter, but contains too much or too little information, not including the main points.
Main Idea Students write the main idea and three supporting details for each chapter read.	Excellent Student response has main idea and three supporting details for the chapters read.	Good Student response has main idea and one or two supporting details for the chapters read.	Needs Improvement Student response has main idea, but no supporting details for the chapters read.
Language and Conventions Students use captial letters at the beginning of their sentences and correction punctuation in their response.	Excellent Student uses punctuation and uppercase letters correctly in response. Student spells all words correctly.	Good Student uses punctuation and uppercase letters correctly most of the time. Student spells most words correctly; minimal errors.	Needs Improvement Student does not use punctuation or uppercase letters in his/her response. Student does not spell words correctly (more than three errors per paragraph).
