Expression of Thoughts	Emerging The topic question was not mentioned and/or was not answered. No evidence of higher level thinking.	Developing Topic question was mentioned but not directly addressed. Thoughts are explained vaguely. Very little evidence of higher level thinking.	Proficient Some evidence of higher level thinking skills. Topic question was mentioned but the evidence of understanding of the concept was weak.	Extending Topic question was answered with thoughtful statements. Student expanded on the question by displaying evidence of critical, higher level thinking.
Organization of Materials	Emerging The student's answer is unclear. There is no clear beginning or end. If there are conclusions, they do not follow from presented evidence.	Developing There is an intro or concluding sentence, but not both. Ideas are not thought out and appear in random order.	Proficient There are intro and concluding sentences but they are vague. Supporting facts are present but do not directly support conclusions that are made (if any are made at all).	Extending There are clear intro and concluding sentences. Student makes logical conclusions based on the info from within their paragraph.
Punctuation and Spelling	Emerging It is clear that the student did not attempt to spell-check or proof-read his/her work. Spelling, punctuation, and grammar mistakes are careless.	Developing There are many spelling mistakes that could have been fixed with general proof-reading. Grammar and punctuation are both poorly executed.	Proficient A few mistakes in spelling and grammar. Overall, some proofreading was done and mistakes corrected.	Extending Excellent writing with good punctuation and spelling. Words are not left out or repeated. Sentences flow with sequential ideas. Easy to read and understand the student's points.
Creativity	Emerging There is no evidence of original thought. Sentences are choppy and lack creativity.	Developing The student makes a slight attempt to write creatively, but many sentences do not "flow"; they are repetitive and/or dull.	Proficient Writer uses a variety of sentences, some short, some long. He/she has given thought to his/her topic and their final product.	Extending Bold, innovative writing that presents material in a unique manner. Writer uses a variety of sentences, some short, some long.
